Description

Silent No More is the latest work of Paphonsak La-or which he starts developing this series from the year 2014 till present. His paintings feature landscape of Namie, Futaba, Okuma, and Tomioka, in Futaba district, Fukushima Prefecture. All these towns have been affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, result in the radioactive leakage from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The incident causing people in those areas to evacuate from their homeland and leaving the city as a ghost town with no man resides.

These natural disasters have been linked to the ongoing political and social turmoils which occurred over years in Thailand. Paphonsak compares the city where people are forced to leave of their own homes due to its uninhabitable condition with the city where people cannot live in peace due to the aggravated social and political conflict. The peaceful, beautiful, lush landscapes of those cities are indeed unlivable and became a deserted town. On the painting, Paphonsak placing phrase and sentence rendered in dust; the texts imply to the social and political scene including Paphonsak’s own feeling. These texts serve as a speaker which communicates to the audience through the silence.
