นราวัลลภ์ ปฐมวัฒน แห่ง The Reading Room กรุงเทพฯ ห้องสมุดศิลปะร่วมสมัยและพื้นที่กิจกรรมทางวัฒนธรรมไม่แสวงผลกำไรที่เธอดำเนินการมาตั้งแต่ปี 2552 เธอยังเป็นอาจารย์ในสาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ คณะโบราณคดี มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร นักวิจัยอิสระ นักเขียน และนักแปลด้วย

เมื่อปีที่แล้วเธอได้รับทุนจาก Japan Foundation Asia Center ในการไปทำวิจัยระยะยาว สำรวจการรวมกลุ่มศิลปินและพื้นที่ทางศิลปะในประเทศญี่ปุ่นที่ดำเนินกิจการด้วยตนเอง ปลอดการสนับสนุนจากแหล่งทุนขนาดใหญ่ ซึ่งในทางประวัติศาสตร์นั้นเป็นทีรู้กันดีผ่านตำราภาษาอังกฤษว่า ช่วงหลังสงครามโลกญี่ปุ่นอุดมไปด้วยศิลปินแนวทดลองที่มีการรวมกลุ่มสร้างความเคลื่อนไหวกันอย่างเข้มแข็ง แต่ปัจจุบันปฏิบัติการเช่นนี้กลับแทบไม่มีให้เห็นหรือสืบค้นศึกษาได้จากเรื่องเล่าของศิลปะร่วมสมัยในญี่ปุ่น เธอจึงตระเวนไปทั่วประเทศพบปะกลุ่มคนต่างๆ เพื่อเรียนรู้กรอบการทำงานหรือทิศทางใหม่ๆ ที่กลุ่มคนเหล่านี้ใช้ในการตั้งคำถามหรือโต้ตอบกับระบบระเบียบในปัจจุบัน

Asian Culture Station ได้เชื้อเชิญเธอมาบรรยายถึงสิ่งที่ได้พบจากการวิจัยครั้งนี้ของเธอ สำหรับผู้สนใจศิลปะร่วมสมัยญี่ปุ่น และผู้มองหาแนวทางการดำเนินกิจกรรมทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมด้วยตนเอง

Asian Culture Station is pleased to invite you to join a lecture on Self-Organized Initiatives and Collective Practices in Japanese Contemporary Art Community by researcher and art library director, Narawan Pathomvat.

In 2009, Narawan Pathomvat founded The Reading Room, a non-profit contemporary art library in Bangkok which continues to provide a platform for cultural activities. Apart from her role as a university lecturer at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University, Pathomvat is also an independent researcher, writer, and translator.

Last year, Pathomvat received a research grant from Japan Foundation Asia Center to conduct a longitudinal survey on self-organized initiatives and collective practices in Japanese art community  that are not funded by major sources of finance. Historically, it is widely known through English textbooks that, after World War II, Japan was replete with experimental artists who gathered and vigorously started a powerful movement. However, such congregation is rarely seen or documented in the narrative of Japanese contemporary art. Pathomvat has thus set off on a journey around the country and met with different groups of people to learn about the framework and directions they use in order to raise questions or respond to the current imposed rules and regulations.

Asian Culture Station invited her to give a lecture on what she has discovered following this research for those interested in Japanese contemporary art or anyone looking for a way to self-organize art and cultural activities.
