Stranger Encounters: Between Ayutthaya and Awamori

Using his Peruvian-Japanese citizenship as a haphazard compass to engage in chance encounters and research across South America, Japan and the Ryukyu islands, theatre director Yudai Kamisato is fascinated by the collective stories of migrants in faraway lands. In this talk, he reflects on the duty of the ‘stranger’ in excavating the deep realities of the local community, and in imagining how life could be in a place not of his or her belonging.

For this event, Yudai invites everyone to join in drinking awamori, a popular Okinawan alcoholic beverage distilled from long-grain Thai indica rice – a practice that dates back to 15thcentury Ayutthaya. In Chiang Mai, he wants to meet people who share an interest in this cultural-alcohol exchange. Entry to this event requires you to bring a local alcoholic drink (not beer) – sura khao, lao khao, yadong, etc.

Born in 1982 in Lima, Peru, Yudai Kamisato is a writer and theatre director. He spent his teens in Paraguay, the United States and elsewhere. In 2006, he became the youngest person to win the top prize at the Toga Directors Competition for Desire Caught by the Tail, based on a script by Pablo Picasso. In 2018, he won the 62nd Kishida Kunio Drama Award for The Story of Descending the Long Slopes of Valparaíso. His works have been performed in Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, France, Belgium, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, and Japan. More recently, he has been creating works that derive from heightened interest in his own identity, the relationship between the individual and the nation, the problems confronting immigrants and workers, and the synchronicities experienced with contemporary others.
