การเดินทางไม่ใช่แค่การย้ายตัวเองจากที่หนึ่งไปยังอีกที่หนึ่ง สำหรับสถาปนิกหนุ่ม ทสึเนโอะ โนดะ ผู้ริเริ่ม TRAVELERS PROJECT แล้ว การเดินทางที่แท้จริงนั้นหมายถึงการเปิดรับความท้าทายใหม่ๆ ให้กับชีวิตในแต่ละวัน ‘นักเดินทาง’ ในนิยามของเขาจึงเดินทางได้แม้ตัวจะอยู่กับที่ ด้วยมีความคิดที่ไม่ยึดติดอยู่แต่กับโลกที่คุ้นเคย และพร้อมจะพบพานเรื่องราวใหม่ๆ รอบตัวอยู่เสมอ

ฟุกุโอกะ เมืองใหญ่บนเกาะคิวชู เมืองที่วัฒนธรรมเดิมไม่ปฏิเสธการเปลี่ยนแปลง ขนาดเกี้ยวสำหรับเทศกาลยามากาสะของเมืองที่มีมากว่า 770 ปี ยังมี Star Wars ไตรภาคล่าสุดอยู่ร่วมกับตำนานท้องถิ่นได้ สีสันของเมืองจึงวูบไหวด้วยแฟชั่นที่ผลัดเปลี่ยนอย่างรวดเร็ว ผู้คนก็ใจกว้างพอจะเปิดพื้นที่ให้ทดลองหาความเป็นได้ใหม่ๆ ตลอดเวลา เมืองใดจะเหมาะกับการเริ่ม TRAVELERS PROJECT ของเขาไปกว่าที่นี่

ช่วงต้นทศวรรษ 1990 ญี่ปุ่นประสบภาวะฟองสบู่อสังหาริมทรัพย์แตก จึงเต็มไปด้วยอาคารที่ขาดแคลนผู้เช่าจำนวนมาก โนดะ เข้าเรียนสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ในราวปี 2000 โดยเน้นศึกษามาทางด้านการฟื้นฟูอาคาร และได้ไปเริ่มชีวิตการทำงานจริงในสตูดิโอของ ชิเงรุ อาโอกิ สถาปนิกชื่อดังผู้บุกเบิกงานด้านนี้ เขาฝึกฝนตนเองจนวันหนึ่งก็ได้เริ่มต้นโครงการของตัวเองเป็นครั้งแรกกับอพาร์ทเมนท์อายุราว 50 ปี หลังหนึ่งในเมืองฟุกุโอกะ เจ้าของอาคารอยากให้เขาซ่อมบำรุงมัน แต่สภาพของอาคารไม่น่าจะอยู่ได้นาน เขาจึงเสนอให้ทดลอง “บูรณะการใช้งานอาคาร” แทน โดยปรับทางเดิน และเปลี่ยนห้องพัก 20 ห้อง เป็นห้างสรรพสินค้าไลฟ์สไตล์ พลิกฟื้นอาคารให้ดึงดูดผู้คนเข้ามาใช้งานมากขึ้น ที่นั่นกลายเป็นต้นแบบที่ทำให้มีอาคารอื่นเลือกที่จะบูรณะการใช้งานตามมาอีก

โครงการล่าสุดของ TRAVELERS PROJECT คือ “Konya2023” อพาร์ทเมนท์อายุครึ่งศตวรรษในย่านสุดเท่ของฟุกุโอกะอย่าง ไดเมียว อาคารนี้มีปัญหาผู้เช่าบางส่วนอยู่มานานเกินไป จนไม่สามารถขยายรายได้ให้เจ้าของตามยุคสมัยที่เปลี่ยนไปได้และตัวอาคารก็น่าจะใช้งานได้อีกเพียง 15 ปีเท่านั้น โนดะ จึงได้เสนอให้เปลี่ยนกิจกรรมการใช้ตึกมาเป็นพื้นที่ให้ ‘นักเดินทาง’ หลากหน้าหลายความคิดได้มาพบปะทำงานร่วมกัน ด้วยการสร้างพื้นที่กิจกรรมต่างๆ ที่วัดการใช้งานด้วย ‘เวลา’ เพื่อกำหนดวงจรของการพบปะคนใหม่ๆ อย่างเช่น ร้านอาหาร คนแวะเวียนเข้ามาใช้พื้นที่ประมาณ 2 ชั่วโมง แกลเลอรี่แสดงงาน 1 เดือน นั่นจะทำให้สามารถจินตนาการการออกแบบให้คนที่มากินข้าวสนใจเวียนเข้ามาดูนิทรรศการได้ชัดเจนขึ้น

ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น เขายังดัดแปลงห้องเช่าเป็นพื้นที่กิจกรรมอื่นๆ อีก อย่าง ห้องพักให้นักเดินทางมาอยู่ระยะสั้นไม่เกินหนึ่งเดือนกับระยะยาวไม่เกินครึ่งปี เพื่อเชิญศิลปิน นักออกแบบ นักวิจัย มาพำนักแล้วสร้างผลงานหรือแชร์ความรู้ และห้องออฟฟิศจำกัดระยะเวลาเช่าที่ 1 ปี หรือ 3 ปี ในราคาถูก ดึงดูดนักสร้างสรรค์รุ่นใหม่มาเช่าใช้โดยไม่ให้อยู่นานมาก เพื่อกระตุ้นให้ใช้โอกาสนี้พัฒนางานของตัวเองให้สำเร็จก่อนต้องย้ายออกไป และขวนขวายการเรียนรู้จากผู้ร่วมอาศัยคนอื่นในช่วงเวลาเดียวกันที่ทำงานแตกต่างกันไปให้ช่วยกันลับคมผลงานให้ดียิ่งขึ้น

Konya2023 ได้สร้างการหมุนเวียนผู้คนมาทำอะไรสนุกๆ ในย่านไดเมียวไว้มากมายตั้งแต่ปี 2008 เป็นต้นมา จนกลายเป็นชุมชนศิลปินและนักออกแบบ ที่บางทีก็มีนิทรรศการศิลปะ บางทีก็มีภัณฑารักษ์มาเปิดโรงเรียนความคิดสร้างสรรค์ บางทีก็มีศิลปินมาวาดลวดลายให้อาคาร จนแม้แต่ดาดฟ้ายังถูกเปลี่ยนเป็นลานจอดยูเอฟโอ บางทีก็จัดเทศกาลยาไต (รถเข็นขายอาหาร) นานาชาติ เพื่อคุยกันเรื่องปัญหาการใช้ที่สาธารณะในฟุกุโอกะ ฯลฯ TRAVELERS PROJECT ของ โนดะ จึงไม่ได้ฟื้นฟูแค่ตัวอาคาร แต่ยังได้สร้างความเคลื่อนไหวทางวัฒนธรรมด้วยพลังของนักเดินทางที่ผลัดกันนำเอาวิธีจัดการปัญหานานาชนิดมาแบ่งปันกัน พร้อมๆ ไปกับหาทางออกทางธุรกิจให้กับอาคารที่ใกล้หมดอายุขัยลงด้วย ทุกวันนี้ โนดะ ยังคงเดินทางไปสู่ความท้าทายในการฟื้นฟูชีวิตของอาคารและย่านอื่นอีกมากมาย และยังคงร่วมกับเพื่อนนักเดินทางขับเคลื่อนความคิดจากที่ Konya2023 กันต่อไป

  

 

KONYA2023: The TRAVELERS PROJECT in Fukuoka

For Tsuneo Noda, architect and founder of the TRAVELERS PROJECT, true travelling is less about moving from one place to another than about exposing oneself to new challenges. A “TRAVELER,” in his definition, can therefore travel even while stationary. One only needs an active mind that is not anchored to the world they know and to be open to new stories around them.

Fukuoka, a big city on the island of Kyushu, does not push away change while still retaining its traditional culture. Take for example the floats in the Yamakasa festival that has been around for 770 years, but features the latest Star Wars trilogy among local legends. The city can be seen evolving constantly with changing trends. People themselves are also welcoming enough to open up space for new experiments and possibilities. It was the perfect environment to launch Noda’s
TRAVELERS PROJECT.

In the early 1990s, Japan’s real estate bubble burst, leaving numbers of buildings without renters. Noda began his architectural studies around the year 2000, focusing on building restoration. Once he graduated, he started work on F a 50-year-old building in Fukuoka. The owner of the building wanted him to repair it, but the condition of the building did not look like it was going to hold up. Instead, Noda suggested repurposing the space by adjusting the walkways and turning the 20 rental rooms into a lifestyle mall. He transformed the building to attract more people to use the space and it became a model for other buildings to follow suit.

The latest project in the TRAVELERS PROJECT is “Konya2023,” an approximately 50-year-old apartment building in Fukuoka’s hippest area, Daimyo. The problem was that some residents prevented the owner from expanding. The building itself also may not last longer than 15 years. Noda suggested repurposing the building into a space for travellers from all over to meet and collaborate. He created spaces for ‘limited time’ activities, such as restaurants where people typically spend two hours and galleries with one-month exhibitions. The space is designed in a way that encourages people dining at restaurants to also visit the exhibitions.

Furthermore, Noda repurposed the rental rooms for other activities, such as short-term rentals for stays under one month and long-term rentals for stays under six months. This is to encourage artists, designers, and researchers to produce quality work and exchange knowledge with one another. A ‘limited time’ office is also available to rent for 1-3 years at an affordable price.

Konya2023 has brought about a cycle of people with fresh minds to Daimyo. You may come across new art exhibitions, curators opening creative schools, artists painting murals on buildings, a rooftop transformed into a UFO parking lot, or the international Yatai Festival (food trucks). The possibilities are endless. Noda’s TRAVELERS PROJECT does not only liven up buildings, but also the movement of culture propelled by travellers who come to discuss solutions to international issues. At the same time, owners of dying buildings are provided with new ways of survival for their businesses. Today, Noda still continues on his journey of breathing new life into buildings and locations, while also working with fellow travellers in growing the ideas of Konya2023
